Pulling Out The Stops

Salisbury Cathedral

The Salisbury Cathedral organ is a supreme example of the work of Henry Willis, the best Victorian organ-builder of his generation. In 2019, it was in need of repair and refurbishment and would be out of action for the majority of the year. The Cathedral appointed RFA to produce a temporary exhibition to engage visitors with the restoration project, and also to design a logo for use on promotional and educational materials.

A hoarding-cum-exhibition was created across the North Transept behind which the larger pipes will be refurbished while the rest of the organ is taken away for restoration. The exhibition is based on a series of arched panels, and features imagery from the Cathedral’s archives, an interactive model organ, touch-screens and videos of the instrument being played.

Cathedral at Heights

Chester Cathedral

Chester Cathedral’s central bell tower, inner roof spaces and galleries presented an opportunity for visitors to physically interact with the building and RFA developed displays and a guided audio tour to open-up these secret places.

Highlights include an engaging re-creation of the former bell ringing chamber including an interactive carillon model, and the bell frame has been transformed into an audio-visual ‘wow’ experience. At the top of the tower, visitors have access to spectacular views of the city and the distant Welsh mountains.
