British Empire & Commonwealth Museum, Bristol I Open September 2002

Winner of the Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence, 2003: Project on a Limited Budget category.

Housed in Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Grade 1 listed Temple Meads station building, this social history museum charted the fascinating - and often controversial - story of the British Empire and Commonwealth in an analytical, non-jingoistic way and culminated in displays about the experiences of immigrants from these areas who are part of the multi-cultural society we live in today.

The object-rich exhibition featured dramatic vistas and a combination of conventional, interactive, sculptural, multi-media and audio-visual displays to engage visitors throughout. Publicly-accessible Radio Room and sound archive facilities adjoined the main exhibition, contained within a glass-fronted library and archive.
